NEWS UPDATE: Current Legislative and Regulatory Action to Resolve BPPVE Closure
The State legislature and BBS are vigorously attempting to resolve the problems created by the demise of BPPVE, the state regulatory agency that was a bridge between out-of-state accredited school programs, such as Western Seminary’s (both San Jose and Sacramento campuses) Marital and Family Therapy degree programs and the BBS.  This bridge allowed Western Seminary to award MFT degrees in California that the BBS accepted for state licensure.  This agency’s demise potentially impacts the MFT degree program and whether the degree will be recognized for the purpose of state licensure.

Proposed legislation would extend the BBS’s ability to accept qualifying degrees from programs approved by the BPPVE as of June 30, 2007 (to candidates graduating on or before July 1, 2010).  Bill AB 1897 has recently passed both houses and is ready for the Governor's signature.  This bill would also allow the BBS to accept degrees from programs accredited by regional accrediting bodies equivalent to WASC.

Until a permanent solution is created, the BBS is also attempting a strategy through regulation that would permit the BBS to continue to accept degrees for state licensure from accredited schools approved by the BPPVE as of June 30, 2007.  This ability to accept degrees would extend to those degrees that are awarded on or before June 30, 2010.  This regulation would become inoperative should there be legislation that continues the BPPVE.

We applaud the BBS for its proactive efforts and look forward to the permanent resolution to this issue.
