Credits Reduced for PhD in Intercultural Education

Lausanne Movement and Western Seminary

March 5, 2025

Two years after launching its first Doctor of Philosophy in Intercultural Education (PhD), Western Seminary is making this degree easier to complete by reducing the total credit hours from 60 to 47. These changes will take effect in the fall of 2025.

“We are thrilled to make our PhD more accessible to students,” says President Chuck Conniry, PhD. “By lowering the amount of credits, we have decreased the overall cost of the degree without any loss in quality.”

The change will allow greater flexibility for PhD students, reducing the number of dissertation hours while providing a new opportunity to participate in colloquiums as part of the revamped degree curriculum.

Coinciding with the change, Western is sunsetting its Doctor of Education in Intercultural Education (EdD). Graduates of the EdD are encouraged to apply to the PhD if they are interested in obtaining their terminal degree with Western.
